The Biggest Loser: How Much is Too Much Weight to Lose?

I watched the Biggest Loser finale last night and was disappointed that my favorite, the cutie Mike Morelli, lost to the less wholesome Helen Phillips by a mere 5 pounds. Mike, who lost more than he weighs now, has hit a healthy weight of approximately 180 pounds, whereas Helen slimmed herself down to a scary 117.

While both Mike and Tara looked fabulous, Helen did not look healthy with her scrawny arms and emaciated look. She did not seem to have built up much in the way of lean muscle (judging from the shape of her arms, which were way too noticeable with their loose skin in her sleeveless dress).

Now people all over the Internet are speculating about Helen's health and methods for achieving this weight loss, and anorexia is the word being bantered about.

The Seriously Anorexic Woman at the Gym

I was swimming at the gym yesterday and could not believe my eyes. A woman walked into the pool area with a body that was so drawn and thin that she literally looked like she had walked out of a concentration camp.

She had on a full red bathing suit so I got a very good look at her body. She wasn't young either. She had absolutely no fat on her body whatsoever. She was maybe 5'4" but could have weighed 60 pounds. Her legs were like sticks and looked like they could barely support her thin body.

When she turned around, you could literally see her skeleton through her skin. You could see every nook and cranny of her spine. Her shoulder blades stuck out like thin jagged rocks.

I was so shocked and appalled I did not know what to do. I thought about saying something to her but what would be the point? She's either aware and trying to heal or in denial.

Super Skinny is Not Better

I am getting more and more concerned because I am seeing women I know - women in their 30s - with so little weight on their frames that their legs are as scrawny as a young teenager's. Too skinny as in Lara Flynn Boyle too skinny.

What's worse is that I hear other too-thin women around them going on about how "great" this looks. These women will often have entire conversations comparing women's butts, and apparently, the smaller the better. (Only, I have news for you...I get more compliments now on my bigger 30-something butt than my smaller 20-something butt of years past.)

When I was at my thinnest, in my 20s, I had a guy decide he did not want to date me because I was too thin and it scared him. (I was never anorexic, just had a high metabolism.) Men definitely like me better a little "filled out." If anything I would say they would rather a woman had slightly more padding than not enough.
